Speech audiometry, a fundamental tool in hearing-loss assessment. Nowadays for an in depth analysis of hearing loss, speech audiometry is done in conjunction with pure-tone audiometry. This test can aid in determining the degree and type of hearing loss.

Clinical Procedure For SDT & SRT
- The patient is fitted with a headphone or speakers are used for the test.
- Our audiologist will use ascending or descending method to assess patients in identifying the words (descending “10 dB down & 5 dB up” and ascending “10 dB up & 5 dB down).
- The words used to assess patients are generally spondaic words.
- Patient will be instructed to detect the presence of speech/words by verbal, hand signal or trigger buttons for SDT.
- For SRT the patient has to repeat the spondaic words pronounced by the audiologist.
Patient Prior Preparation
Speech Recognition Threshold (SRT) / Speech Reception Threshold
- The objective of this measure is to obtain the lowest level at which speech can be identified at least half the time.
- In other words, it is the lowest hearing level (intensity) at which the patient can correctly RECOGIZE, REPEAT & PERCIVE the speech stimuli 50 % of the time.
Patient Prior Preparation
Speech Detection Threshold (SDT) / Speech Awareness Threshold (SAT)
- The objective of this measurement is to obtain the lowest point of hearing level at which the patient is able to hear and sense the presence of speech signal for almost half of the time. It is not mandatory that the listener should identify the sound as speech, but must show evidence of presence of sound.
- SDT is usually performed for young children (less than 2 years, they can’t repeat spondaic words& not co-operative). Patients speaking another language (apart English) or those victims who have impaired language function because of neurological insult & strokes are recommended for SDT test.
- No physical response from the patient is required for this test.
Average Testing Time
For an effective Speech Audiometry session it fetches around 1hr for completion. Clinical reports will be provided immediately after test.
