Have you sensed hearing deficiency? PTA is the best choice.

1. Pure-tone audiometry could be described as a behavioral test used to measure hearing sensitivity.

2. The essence of PTA is to determine the threshold level for hearing in a patient. In addition it helps the audiologist at DENOC to identify the degree (mild, moderate, severe, profound) of hearing loss, type (conductive, sensorineural, mixed) of hearing loss and its configuration (unilateral or bilateral). Thus, providing the basis for diagnosis and management.

3. The result of Hearing analysis is plotted on an audiogram, which is a graph displaying intensity as a function of frequency.

Clinical Procedure

Hearing Aid Centre Chennai Pure Tone Audiometry

1. Pure Tone Audiometry consists of two stages.

  • Air Conduction testing
  • Bone Conduction testing

2. Test is performed using audiometer, headphones, insert earphones or sound fields.

3. A pure tone (single frequency) is passed to the ear through an earphone and the lowest intensity at which this tone is perceived 50% of the time is measured in decibels (dB). This measurement is called threshold.

4. The testing procedure is repeated at specific frequencies from 250 to 8000 hertz (Hz, or cycles per second) for each ear, and the thresholds are recorded on a graph called an audiogram.

5. Bone conduction testing is done by placing an oscillator on the mastoid process and measuring threshold at the same frequencies. Masking noise is used sometimes in the non-test ear to prevent its participation in the test.

Patient Prior Preparation

1. No major preparation is required as far as PTA is considered.

2. Patients should be responsive while testing.

3. Patients unable to cooperate because of young age or other conditions cannot undergo pure tone audiometry. They may need to have the auditory system tested by other methods.

Average Testing Time

For an effective PTA testing session it fetches around 45mins to 1hr for completion. Clinical reports will be provided immediately after test.
